One of the medicines of menopause

One thing that menopause and burnout has taught me is that “Slow and steady wins the race”.

I always used to think that people who were extremely productive and just got everything done in a day, were the ones that had all their shit together.

These days having worked extensively with my own developmental and being aware of the many collective  trauma spells we live within, I tend to admire those who

have time to garden,

have an afternoon nap,

schedule in a week off every six weeks,

only work a three day week,

start their mornings in a leisurely manner or

prioritize pleasure, relaxation and rest!!

Over those who seem to keep ploughing through doing more and more even if it looks like they are ‘achieving’ a lot.

If there is one thing that I’d like to impart on the younger generation, it's that it's okay to go slower.

In fact, by being slow and steady with our business (and life)it gets to be regenerative, the rate at which we grow is sustainable, we are not exhausting our  future resources  in the process PLUS its way more pleasurable 🤩

It's a myth that we need to work harder. What we actually (most of us) need to do is to listen more deeply to our bodies, and stop overriding them in the pursuit of apparent success.

By burning through our own resources and pushing ourselves what we are actually doing is burning essential resources that we need in order to be healthy as we mature. It's not just our planet's resources we are burning through with extraction and with no thought for the future, it's also our own.

We can still achieve big goals by going slow and steady, and what makes our big goals more achievable is working towards them in small doable steps thus avoiding the land of burnout and overwhelm.

This step-by-step approach allows you to still keep your aim high AND keep moving towards what you want.

Think of the old fable about the Tortoise and the Hare.🙃

The moral of this old fable is that you can be more successful by doing things slowly and keep moving at steady pace than by acting quickly or carelessly, or pushing yourself hard and then collapsing.

We do this is by noticing the body’s sensations, notice what body queues are telling you you’re getting hyper, dysregulated, stressed or overwhelmed and instead of overriding that feeling and pushing on -

We take time out , pause- do something that nourishes, and brings  more wellbeing and ease .

Your future self will thank you!

Another thing we can do when thinking about a big task, project or something we want to do rather than try to go all out and do it all at once (too big too soon) We instead enquire “ What is the next smallest doable step towards that” and we simply keep proceeding in a way that honours our body in the smallest doable step towards our goals kinda way.

It makes it way easier than biting off more than you can chew, or going all out and then collapsing (which isn’t sustainable)

By going step by step you can keep the home fires burning rather than blasting through all your resources and going up in smoke before you’ve got anywhere near accomplishing your dreams!
