What Is Semen Retention? A Nervous-System-Led Guide for Men

Ellie Wilde, sex and intimacy coach for men, London

What is Semen Retention?

Semen retention means choosing to go for a period of time without ejaculating. Some men do it for a few days, others for 30 to 60 days or longer. Some also pause porn and fantasy during that time.

Men try it for many reasons: more energy, more confidence, less compulsive sexual behaviour, or a deeper connection with a partner.

What do men report?

In my work, men often tell me they feel more confident, less driven by constant sexual hunger, more grounded and more relaxed. Many also notice they can stay present with uncomfortable feelings instead of reaching for a quick escape. In relationships, a common shift is from extraction, where sex is about getting something, to connection.

These are client experiences, not clinical claims. Everyone’s body is different.

Where most approaches go wrong.

Most advice online is about control: hold it in, clench, push the energy up, stay disciplined. I’ve worked with men’s bodies for 15 years in therapeutic tantric massage, with thousands of men, and I used to think more control, holding and breath practices were what they needed.

They weren’t. Holding often created more tension in the body. What helped far more was supporting men to loosen up, learn to breathe, express and release tension.

Why the nervous system matters.

A body that is stressed and braced tends to chase relief, and for many men sex or porn becomes the fastest route to it. Willpower alone rarely fixes this, because it’s the nervous system, not the mind, that is driving the urge.

That’s why I focus on regulation first. When the body learns to settle, discomfort becomes easier to stay with, and the urge to escape often softens.

Look underneath the habit.

If someone has compulsive habits around porn or sex, stopping the behaviour is only half of it. I also look at what sits underneath: stress, loneliness, shame, pressure to perform, or a body that has never learned to relax. Working with that is what makes change last, rather than a streak you white-knuckle through.

George’s story

Here’s what this looked like for one man I worked with.

I first met George as a massage client. Over time he shared that he hadn't had sexwith his wife for many years. He felt lonely, disconnected and increasingly trapped in a pattern of pornography and online domination sites that had become a guilty secret. What had started as an escape had slowly become a habit. One that was costing him money, energy and self-respect.

When I suggested the 30-day semen retention and self-pleasure journey, he looked at me as if I was slightly mad.

"Why would I want to do that?" he asked.

At first, the journey was difficult. Around the second week he wasn't sure he could continue. He kept asking me how much longer he had to go. When could he finally come?

When we reached 30 days, he asked again.

To his surprise, my answer was: "Just continue."

Not because ejaculation is wrong or bad or that I was trying to punish him. But I could sense that he was still counting the days until relief.

The habit hadn't quite loosened its grip.

And then something remarkable happened. The hunger began to soften. He stopped obsessing about when he could ejaculate. He stopped counting the days.

He began to enjoy the feeling of having energy in his body. His confidence improved.

His attention returned to other areas of his life. Work. Home. Relationships. Things that had been neglected for years.

One day he told me that he no longer felt compelled to release the energy. In fact, he liked the feeling of being full of it.

It wasn't that he believed he should never ejaculate again. He simply wasn't being driven by the habit anymore.

That was the moment I knew the journey had done its work. And it wasn’t because he had reached a certain number of days. It was because he had reclaimed choice. The compulsion had softened.

The hunger had softened. And more of George had become available for his life.

So, is semen retention right for you?

For some men, a period of ejaculatory awareness is a powerful way to reset their relationship with desire. The difference is how you do it: with awareness, breath, expression and support, not suppression or shame.
